Mikel Arteta said he has spoken with Willian about the Brazilian’s trip to Dubai during the international break and “dealt with” the issue, although the Arsenal manager would not confirm if the winger will be in the squad to face Leeds United this weekend.

Willian flew to Dubai during the break and was pictured in a restaurant. Telegraph Sport understands the Arsenal players were advised by the club to not travel abroad, although Willian is believed to have since claimed he was there on business.

“That has been dealt with and explained, and we move on,” said Arteta. “We had a conversation and I explained what I was expecting. There are a lot of personal factors at the moment and, from our side, we need to be in their shoes.

“A lot of players are having different issues, like any public person out there, and sometimes they make decisions based on the needs or the moment or what people are expecting from there. Whether they are right or wrong, after obviously it is a thing we have to discuss.”

Asked if Willian will be in the squad that travels to Leeds, Arteta said: “It has been resolved, explained and dealt with in the team and the club. That is all I can say.”

Arteta also played down a training-ground clash between David Luiz and Dani Ceballos, saying such heated moments are common behind closed doors and that there are no problems between the two players.

“Training is very competitive and issues happen a lot of times,” said Arteta. “Those things get resolved immediately within the team and there is not much to say.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to be without star midfielder Thomas Partey for the trip to Leeds after he suffered a thigh strain in their defeat by Aston Villa before the international break.

Mohamed Elneny and Sead Kolasinac are also unavailable after testing positive for Covid-19 while on duty with their national teams.
