The Crown season 5 will reportedly feature Emma Corrin as Princess Diana despite the role being recast.

As with previous runs of the Netflix royal drama, the entire cast is replaced every two seasons and Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has already been confirmed to portray the late Princess of Wales in the show's final fifth and sixth seasons.

Yet, it seems there will still be room for more Corrin in flashbacks.

According to The Sun, show bosses have been so impressed by the reaction to Corrin's performance as Princess Diana they are planning to bring her back next season.

An insider told the paper: "Under normal circumstances, The Crown’s rule is that the entire cast changes after every two series, but Emma has been exceptional as Di."

They added: "So although Elizabeth will take over the role, they’re looking at ways that her predecessor can appear, albeit in flashbacks to her younger years."

Netflix declined to comment when approached by Mirror Online.

The Sun notes that such returns have been done before despite the casts being swapped out.

Elsewhere, John Lithgow reprised his role for a final scene as Sir Winston Churchill in the third season of the drama despite belonging to the first generation of cast members.

Meanwhile, creator Peter Morgan himself has already suggested that he will find a way to bring back Olivia Colman as The Queen in the next season.

According to Radio Times, Morgan said of a comeback for Colman at the fourth run's virtual premiere: "I don’t want to say anything yet, but I’m toying with a couple of ideas… I’ll see what I can do."

Colman will be replaced by Imelda Staunton as the monarch for the drama's final two seasons, while Jonathan Pryce will join her as husband Prince Philip and Lesley Manville will portray the Queen's younger sister, Princess Margaret.

It has also previously been reported that The Affair star Dominic West will portray Prince Charles opposite Debicki's Diana as the show tackles their acrimonious divorce.

The Crown season 4 is available now on Netflix.
