And SunSport understands Parky, who has been out of work since leaving crisis-hit Bolton in August, is set to hold talks with Sunderland this weekend.

Parkinson, 51, is liked by Stadium of Light chiefs having twice won promotion out of League One with Colchester and Bolton – both on shoestring budgets.

But Sunderland are looking at a number of other managers including Wycombe’s Gareth Ainsworth and Wigan’s Paul Cook, who are both keen on the job.

Ainsworth is also attracting interest from Championship side Millwall and has been given permission to speak to other clubs.

Coventry chief Mark Robins was on Sunderland’s shortlist but the Midlands club rejected an approach and he signed a new deal with them on Friday.

Daniel Stendel, who was sacked by Barnsley this week, is also being looked at by the Black Cats, but Gary Rowett has turned them down.

Nigel Pearson is another who has come into Sunderland owner Stewart Donald’s thinking – and he could bring with him club legend Kevin Phillips as his No2.

Pearson won promotion out of League One with Leicester and has been out of work since losing his job at Belgium club OH Leuven in February.
