Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been robbed of as many as 11 first team players this year at some stage as fitness concerns bite hard.

There have been suggestions the United players have been upset at the way they have been worked too hard over pre-season by manager Solskjaer.

The Norwegian claimed the players he inherited from Jose Mourinho were not fit enough and has put them through punishing sessions to get them in condition to play the pressing game he wants.

But there are now concerns things are not being done properly in training, due to the number of injuries being suffered.

Pert, 41, has built up an impressive coaching career at clubs in the UK and in Canada – where he was most recently assistant manager at Vancouver Whitecaps.

And crucially he is highly respected for combining his football work with a deep knowledge of fitness and conditioning.

Pert will work alongside Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick coaching the first team, with an eye on making sure the work they are doing is geared towards ensuring they are physically ready for the demands of matches.

His arrival is the latest in a series of backroom changes Solskjaer has been making since taking charge last December.

The main coaching team was put in place immediately, but since then there has been a change in the structure from the academy up which has seen Head of Academy Nicky Butt taking a more senior role.

Former United reserve team player Neil Wood was appointed as the lead coach in the under-23 development squad, with Quinton Fortune working alongside him.

The aim was for Wood, Fortune and Butt to help provide a more seamless transition from development squad into the first team at a time when youngsters like Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong are being nurtured.

Another former playe Michael Clegg was then appointed to the backroom team, before Ed Leng was appointed in the summer with the brief of being the first team's strength and conditioning coach.

Leng had been the strength and conditioning coach at Sunderland before taking on a role as the Head of Sports Science at Melbourne City.

But just three months after he was brought in, Solskjaer has been forced to make another appointment in Pert to help ease the pressure on Leng.
