Man Utd could be relegated if they don’t fix striker crisis, warns Sam Allardyce as Harry Kane is tipped for transfer

SAM ALLARDYCE has warned Manchester United they face relegation if they cannot fix their goalscoring crisis.

The Red Devils are just two points from the drop zone after an abysmal showing in a 1-0 defeat to drop candidates Newcastle.

They have scored just nine league goals this season, with four of those coming in the opening-day win over Chelsea, and Marcus Rashford has failed to shoulder the burden up front.

And Big Sam – who has a reputation as a relegation firefighter – thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to find a solution quickly.

He told talkSPORT's Alan Brazil show: "It isn't beyond the realms of possibility that they could catastrophically fall into more problems if confidence goes and injuries stay like they are.

"Players tend not to get as fit as quick as they would do when things are going well, that's an absolute fact.

"There's the disturbance of [Paul] Pogba wanting away and who will pop up next saying, 'I see this going the wrong way, I want to leave?'.

"Manchester United do not have enough goals and you can see it becoming a struggle. Hopefully it's not a struggle down the bottom end, but they're certainly heading that way."

Former United star Lee Sharpe thinks Harry Kane would be the answer – although admits he would come with a hefty price.

He told talkSPORT. “I think you are looking at least £300million.

“You need someone like a Harry Kane for £200m/£220m that is going to score you 25 goals a season and you’ve got a different outlook in the team. So it is not going to be a cheap one.

“It’s difficult to keep up with the likes of Man City and Liverpool when they’ve set such high standards.

“You’ve got to stop comparing this team to Liverpool and City and great United teams of the past.

“They need to be given the chance to grow and educate themselves and become potentially what they could be in a year or 18 months’ time.”
