Iran has barred women from spectating at games on the back of clerics claiming they should be protected from the masculine atmosphere and sight of males in shorts.

But Fifa were finally forced to intervene when one female, dubbed Blue Girl, killed herself when she set herself on fire last month while she faced the prospect of prison for sneaking into grounds to watch matches.

Sahar Khodayari had been caught disguising herself as a man to watch her blue kit-wearing favourite team Esteghlal in action.

Her death sparked an outcry and led to Fifa president Gianni Infantino having to threaten Iran with expulsion from the World Cup unless they lifted their strict exclusion laws.

Iran responded by making tickets available for Thursday's Qatar 2022 qualifier against Cambodia available to all to buy.

The first batch are understood to have sold out within an hour, with more tickets immediately being put on sale.

Even so, those females attending will be placed in a segregated area of Tehran's Azadi Stadium – and watched over by around 150 female police officers.

It is believed around 3,500 tickets have been snapped up by women – one of whom is journalist Raha Poorbakhsh.

She said: “I still can’t believe this is going to happen because after all these years of working in this field, watching everything on television, now I can experience everything in person.”
