Man Utd want to sit down for talks over extension with Eric Bailly to stop injured defender leaving on free transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to sit down with Eric Bailey over extending his contract – despite his shocking injury record.

The Ivory Coast defender is out of contract next summer, and will be a free agent once his £120,000-a-week terms expire.

He is out injured until January after picking up a medial knee ligament injury in a pre-season warm-up match.

It was his second serious injury in the space of a year, following an ankle problem that kept him out for four-months.

But United feel the 25-year-old still has a future at the club, and want him to stay and be back-up to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

It is understood he has a clause in his contract, which means boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can extend his deal by two-years.

An Old Trafford source said: “The club want Eric to stay and are looking for talks about an extension.

“We don’t want to lose him on a free transfer next summer. It’s just down to both parties agreeing to everything.

“His injury record isn’t a major concern for us. We just think he has been unlucky with everyone over the last few years.

“Ole is a fan of the player and we’re going to convince him to stay, at least that is the plan at present.”

Bailly is free to speak to other clubs around Europe in January over a free transfer, and can sign a pre-contract.

But United are desperate not to lose anything on the £26m investment they paid Villarreal in 2016.

This summer, Arsenal and a number of top clubs across Europe showed interest in signing the ex-Espanyol man.
