The 28-year-old scored 28 goals for Atalanta last season while on loan from Serie A rivals Sampdoria.

And Pellegrini wants him to step in following Marko Arnautovic's move to China.

Celta Vigo striker Gomez was a target but he is heading to Valencia to stay in Spain.

But Zapata should be available for the right price to finally become a Hammer after they were interested in him earlier in his career.

BALOTELLI AN OPTION

And there is a cheaper option that could become available.

The Hammers have reportedly been offered the chance to sign free agent Mario Balotelli.

The former Manchester City and Liverpool striker is currently without a club after leaving Marseille.

Balotelli, 28, bagged eight times in 12 games during his six-month spell with the French side but opted against extending his deal.

The Italian international is believed to favour a return to the Premier League.

And now his agent Mino Raiola has contacted the Hammers to enquire whether there is any interest from the East London outfit.

But AS claims he is looking for wages of £3.6m-a-year – which would be an issue.
