Chelsea board ready to give Lampard time… unless he’s truly awful from the start

CHELSEA aim to give Frank Lampard time to find his feet when he gets the keys to Stamford Bridge.

Blues icon Lamps is first choice to replace Italian Maurizio Sarri with negotiations now underway.

Lampard played for Luiz Felipe Scolari, Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Di Matteo — none of whom lasted a season at Chelsea.

He will be taking over a squad that lost Eden Hazard while the club is also serving a transfer ban.

So he will not be axed unless he has a catastrophic start — as Chelsea know they are hiring Lamps ahead of schedule due to the circumstances.

The Blues have so far not asked for the ban to be frozen by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is not set to give an appeal verdict until after the transfer window shuts on August 8.

But the expectation remains that Lampard will finish in the top four and deliver Champions League football for 2020-21.

Roman Abramovich and the Blues hierarchy want Lampard — who will be supported by fellow Chelsea old boy Jody Morris and ex-Newcastle keeper Shay Given — to give the club’s outstanding academy products their chance.

There was confusion at the Bridge last season over Sarri’s reluctance to trust Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Lampard can also call upon returning loan starlets Reece James, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and striker Tammy Abraham.

The club feel Ethan Ampadu and George McEachran have the potential to succeed but will not pressure the new boss.
