MANCHESTER CITY'S late goal was ruled out because Christian Eriksen's back pass struck Bernardo Silva's leg before it reached Sergio Aguero, according to the laws of the game.
Pep Guardiola's men went wild when Raheem Sterling found the net to make it 5-4 on aggregate before the referee consulted VAR.
2 The pass from Christian Eriksen clearly hit Bernardo Silva
With the score locked at 4-4 in the Champions League quarter-final, Eriksen passed the ball back towards his own goal.
Aguero latched onto the ball and charged into the box before he pulled it back for Sterling to score.
The assistant official kept his flag down, but referee Cuneyt Cakir signalled for VAR as Aguero was in an offside position.
City's goal would have counted if the pass from the Tottenham midfielder went straight through to Aguero – but it didn't.
Eriksen's pass clearly rebounded off Silva before it landed at Aguero's feet.
Fans could argue the Spaniard's touch was not deliberate, but that does not change the decision.
The FA website states a player is offside if they are "interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate."
Fans on Twitter could not believe their eyes after the goal was disallowed and Spurs secured their spot in the semi-finals.
One fan joked: "Absolutely extraordinary level of genius from Eriksen to spot Aguero offside and play it off a City player to waste time and stop the goal from counting."
After the match, Eriksen said: "I think I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet today.

It was counted after it was reviewed by VAR, but video footage clearly showed the ball hitting his arm before it reached the net.
