Both managers had to be separated by stewards and police officers with Stendel, 45, allegedly left with bloodied mouth.

Barton is claimed to have lashed out at the Barnsley chief in the tunnel, knocking out two of his teeth with a headbutt.

Witnesses claim the Fleetwood boss also punched Stendel in the aftermath of the spat which is believed to have started with an exchange of words after Harry Souttar was sent off in the 65th minute.

And according to the Mirror, German boss Stendel has undergone emergency dental surgery following the assault.

He did not speak to the reporters at Oakwell after the game, but is expected to do a pre-match press conference on Wednesday ahead of the match against Shrewsbury on Friday.

Barton had to be physically stopped by the police as he tried to leave Barnsley's ground following the clash.

As he was being driven out of the gates with three Fleetwood officials, their BMW was halted by a male steward and a female police officer.

On Sunday, South Yorkshire Police issued a statement, saying: "Officers received reports of an assault at Barnsley Football Club today, Saturday, 13 April, this incident has been crimed and will be thoroughly investigated."

Barnsley said they "could confirm there was an alleged incident" and the club was "assisting the police with its enquiries".

Fleetwood said they had "been made aware of an alleged incident" and were "currently establishing the facts" but neither they nor Barton had been contacted by police.

It's not the first time Barton has found himself in hot water this season either.
