Now his old United team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opened the door at the Carrington Training Ground to keep his eye in.

Solskjaer said: “He's invited here if he wants to come and have a little chat about it, we've texted and it didn't work out, that's just management.”

Scholes worked briefly as a coach at United back in 2014 during Ryan Giggs' four games in charge following the axing of David Moyes.

He also coached the under-23 team when Sir Alex Ferguson was still at the helm having retired from playing in August 2011.
